WELCOME TO THE SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT!
It is with great enthusiasm that we begin the 2011-2012 academic school year. The Mount Carmel Social Studies Department continues to enjoy an impeccable reputation pertinent to academic success and increased rigor. The department itself applauds its students for their hard work and dedication to furthering their education and working diligently to meet the challenges of historical interpretation and critical thinking. It is with great pride in our academic institution that we are happy to report some of the highest standardized test scores and commended ratings in the State of Texas for the 2010-2011 academic school year. The future looks bright! As you may well know, the Texas Legislature and the Texas Education Agengy have initiated actions across the state that are designed to increase the amount of academic and curricular rigor within the classroom. Effective this year, ninth graders will take end of course exams for English/Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The State of Texas Academic Assessment of Readiness or STAAR tests are designed to challenge students as well as provide a formative assessment capable of taking an in-depth look at overall college readiness. The stakes are higher than ever! However, the Mount Carmel Community has always responded to challenges with fierce optimism and enthusiasm. When Mount Carmel High School was yanked from us, the fight began. Within three months, Mount Carmel Academy opened its doors to approximately 190 students. When the critics said that the school's financial infrastructure would falter and eventually fail, benefactors stepped up in a big way. When it was said that the school would consistently be rated as academically unacceptable on an annual basis, student TAKS results indicated just the opposite. Mount Carmel now enjoys the reputation of being among the highest performing charter schools in the United States of America. When it was said that no one would come to school here, students searching for an excellent education came in droves. Mount Carmel Academy will proudly open its doors to 360 students on August 22, 2011. This is the school's highest enrollment since 1988. In true Carmel fashion, we will continue to work hard this year just as we always do. Therefore it is important to utilize this website as a tool for academic enrichment and overall enhancement. In the near future, a multitude of tools on this website will be available for students and parents alike so that you may be able to do well in your social studies disciplines.
